U.S. DOT & E-Mark Certification Guide
Understanding the safety standards behind CyberMetals spare tyre kits.
When it comes to emergency equipment, safety should never be left to assumption.
At CyberMetals, we believe customers deserve clear, visible, and independently verifiable safety standards. That is why our spare tyre kits feature tyres carrying both U.S. DOT Certification and European E-Mark Certification.
This guide explains what these certifications mean, how to identify them, how certification information can be traced, and why dual-certified tyres matter when choosing a spare tyre kit for real-world roadside emergencies.
Why Certification Matters
Not all temporary spare tyres are manufactured or marked to the same standards.
Unlike product claims that rely only on packaging or marketing materials, certification markings are physically moulded into the tyre sidewall and remain visible throughout the life of the tyre.
These markings provide an additional level of transparency, allowing important manufacturing and approval information to be inspected directly from the tyre itself.
CyberMetals spare tyre kits feature tyres carrying:
- U.S. DOT Certification
- European E-Mark Certification
What Is DOT Certification?
DOT stands for the United States Department of Transportation.
A tyre carrying a DOT marking indicates that the manufacturer has certified the tyre as complying with applicable U.S. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS).
The DOT code also provides manufacturing traceability information, allowing key production details to be identified directly from the tyre sidewall.
How to Identify a DOT Certified Tyre
Look for the letters DOT moulded into the tyre sidewall.
Example: DOT 10U OYLPCR 3223
| Marking | Meaning |
|---|---|
| DOT | U.S. DOT Compliance Mark |
| 10U | Manufacturing Plant Code |
| OYLPCR | Internal Tyre Specification Code |
| 3223 | Production Date Code |
The final four digits indicate the tyre’s manufacturing date.
- 32 = Week 32
- 23 = Year 2023
Because DOT markings include manufacturing date information, customers can identify when the tyre was produced and confirm important production details directly from the sidewall.
What Is E-Mark Certification?
E-Mark Certification is a European approval marking system established under UNECE regulations.
Tyres carrying an E-Mark have been approved in accordance with recognised European type approval requirements. The E-Mark identifies the approval authority responsible for certifying the tyre and provides a visible approval reference on the tyre sidewall.
Unlike a simple product label, the E-Mark approval number forms part of the tyre’s official type approval record held by the relevant approval authority.
How to Identify an E-Mark Certified Tyre
Look for the letter “E” inside a circle, followed by a country code and approval number.
Example: E4 028483
| Marking | Meaning |
|---|---|
| E | European Type Approval Mark |
| 4 | Approval Country Code |
| 028483 | Certification Approval Number |
Common E-Mark Country Codes
| Code | Country |
|---|---|
| E1 | Germany |
| E2 | France |
| E3 | Italy |
| E4 | Netherlands |
| E11 | United Kingdom |
| E13 | Luxembourg |
In the example above, E4 indicates approval issued by the Netherlands type approval authority.
Certification Traceability & Verification
At CyberMetals, we believe certification should be transparent, visible, and independently verifiable.
Both DOT and E-Mark markings are permanently moulded into the tyre sidewall during manufacturing. These markings provide a traceable record of production and certification information.
DOT Traceability
The DOT code provides manufacturing traceability information that can be used to identify:
- Manufacturing plant code
- Tyre specification code
- Production week
- Production year
DOT manufacturer information may be referenced through publicly available resources maintained by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
E-Mark Traceability
The E-Mark approval code identifies the regulatory authority responsible for approving the tyre under UNECE regulations.
- Approval authority
- Approval country
- Certification reference number
While E-Mark approval databases are generally maintained by certification authorities and are not publicly searchable in the same way as DOT manufacturer databases, the approval number remains linked to the official type approval record held by the relevant approval authority.
Verify the Markings Yourself
Customers can inspect both certification markings directly on the tyre sidewall upon delivery.
Unlike packaging labels or marketing materials, these markings are permanently moulded into the tyre itself and cannot simply be added after production.
This allows customers to independently confirm key certification and traceability information on their CyberMetals spare tyre.
DOT and E-Mark: Two Different Certification Systems
| Certification | Region | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| DOT | United States | Federal tyre safety compliance and manufacturing traceability |
| E-Mark | Europe (UNECE) | European type approval and certification identification |
Although these certification systems originate from different regulatory frameworks, both provide visible markings that allow customers to inspect important safety and traceability information directly on the tyre.
Why CyberMetals Uses Dual-Certified Tyres
A spare tyre is not just an accessory. It is emergency equipment designed to help drivers continue their journey safely following a puncture or tyre failure.
For this reason, we believe customers should be able to see, inspect, and verify important certification information for themselves.
That is why CyberMetals spare tyre kits feature tyres carrying both U.S. DOT and European E-Mark certification markings.
- Recognised international certification systems
- Visible sidewall identification markings
- Manufacturing traceability
- Independent verification
- Confidence when it matters most
When the unexpected happens on the side of the road, confidence comes from knowing the equipment you are relying on carries recognised certification markings and traceable production information.
Because safety should never be assumed.
It should be visible, traceable, and verifiable.
